COPD Screening and Diabetes Risk Assessment Clinics

November is National COPD and Diabetes Awareness Month

Throughout the month of November, COPD screening and diabetes risk assessment clinics will be offered across the province in various locations.

The clinics will provide information about COPD and appropriate participants will be encouraged to take the Canadian Lung Health Test. If you meet the criteria, pre-bronchodilator spirometry testing will be offered. Spirometry testing (pre-bronchodilator only) will be performed by Primary Care Nurses trained in spirometry or a Respiratory Therapist. This is not for the purpose of diagnosis. If you have findings inconsistent for someone of your age, you will be provided with a form to take to your family physician or nurse practitioner that further testing is recommended.

In addition, the clinics will provide information about diabetes and appropriate persons will be offered the CANRISK questionnaire to help identify if you are at risk of pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. Point of care glucose testing will be offered not as a diagnostic tool but rather to assess for abnormal glycemia. If you have a moderate to high CANRISK score or abnormal point of care glucose results, you will be provided a letter to take to your family physician or nurse practitioner for appropriate screening for type 2 diabetes.
