Marion L. Reid Grant

Beginning in the fall of 2024, the Marion L. Reid Grant will provide funding for PEI residents who are enrolled in eligible health care programs at universities and colleges across Canada. Though most of the eligible programs of study are only available off-island, UPEI's Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner programs are also eligible for this grant. 

How does the Marion L. Reid Grant work?

1. If you are an eligible student, you will receive the grant each academic year while attending post-secondary studies in an eligible health care program up to a maximum of four (4) academic years. You can receive $3,200 annually with the maximum total grant payable up to $12,800.
2. Each year, you will be required to provide an updated application form and transcript to verify that you remain eligible for the grant. 
3. Following graduation, you will have twelve (12) months to find full-time employment in your health care field of study anywhere in PEI. 
4. You must sign a Marion L. Reid Grant Funding Agreement which includes a work commitment that you complete two (2) years of full-time employment in PEI in your health care program field of study. 
5. This work commitment will be based on the total number of hours worked. For this grant, full-time employment is defined as thirty (30) hours per week. You are required to work 3,120 hours in total (30 hours per week x 104 weeks). You must submit pay stubs at the end of each year (Dec. 31) to verify hours completed in that calendar year. 

If you do not complete these requirements, you must repay the grant in full.

Who is eligible for the Marion L. Reid Grant?

To receive the Marion L. Reid Grant, you must meet ALL the following criteria:

• Must be a PEI resident:
  • The same definition of PEI resident is used in the Provincial Student Loan program - You are considered a resident of PEI if you (as an independent or married/common-law student) or your family (as a dependent student) has most recently maintained a family home in PEI for at least twelve (12) consecutive months prior to beginning your post-secondary education. (You can also establish residency in PEI based on your spouse’s employment while you were married and chose to remain here to study after the relationship ended.) 
    You do not earn residency status as a full-time student attending a PEI post-secondary institution
• Must be a Canadian citizen, or a “permanent resident” [as defined by subsection 2(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada)], or a “protected person” [as defined by subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada)], and have a valid social insurance number (SIN);
• Must be enrolled in post-secondary education at a Canadian university or college; 
• Must be enrolled as a full-time student (nine (9) semester hours or twenty (20) hours of instruction per week) for a period of at least twenty-four (24) continuous weeks;
  • in the case of study abroad semesters, overseas work terms or co-ops, or overseas campuses, please reach out to Student Financial Services to confirm eligibility;
• Must be enrolled in one of the following health care programs:
  • Cardiology Technologist
  • Dental Hygienist
  • Health Information Management Professional
  • Medical Lab Technologist
  • Medical Radiation Technologist
  • Medical Sonographer
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Pharmacist 
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Physician Assistant
  • Registered Nurse
  • Respiratory Therapist
  • Social Worker
• Must be returning to PEI (or remaining on PEI) to work in your field of study following graduation. 

How do I apply for the Marion L. Reid Grant?

You must complete the online web form below to request an application package. The application package will include an application form, the Marion L. Reid Grant Agreement (pending approval of your application), and a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page. Ensure that you read through all the documents. The completed application package should be dropped off to the Student Financial Services office in person or mailed.to the address below. 

Emailed applications will not be accepted.

Applications may be submitted to Student Financial Services from December 1 to May 31 in your current year of study. 

Are there any limitations to the grant?

This grant is not retroactive. Students may not apply for grant funding for academic years already completed. However, students may apply in the current academic year in any year of study.

You are responsible to find your own employment in your health care program field of study. This grant does not offer nor guarantee your employment.

Can I receive both the Marion L. Reid Grant and the George Coles Bursary?

You are not eligible for the Marion L. Reid Grant in any year in which you receive the George Coles Bursary. 

However, if you have received the George Coles Bursary in the past for a previous degree or diploma, then you are eligible to apply for the grant. 

You may apply for this grant if you are receiving SkillsPEI funding, Employment Insurance (EI), student loans, or funding from other tuition funding programs.

What if I change my mind and no longer want to work on PEI after I graduate from my program?

If you do not complete the terms of the program and the Marion L. Reid Grant Agreement, then the grant becomes a debt owing to Government and you are required to repay the grant. If you wish to terminate your Marion L. Reid Grant Agreement, you must do so in writing. Failure to repay the grant will result in collection efforts. 

When will I receive the Marion L. Reid Grant?

If you begin your studies in the fall, you can expect to receive the Marion L. Reid Grant in January or February of that academic year. All grant awards will be credited to your student account at the post-secondary institution you attend and will not be sent to you directly. 

If you begin your post-secondary studies outside the traditional September to April academic year, the award date will be determined after being reviewed. 

Check your student account following approval to ensure you received the grant.

If you do not wish to use the grant towards your post-secondary educational costs and you have a credit balance on your student account, then you may request a refund from your school.
