Hillsborough Bridge active transportation pathway is open

The new Hillsborough Bridge active transportation pathway is open, providing a key connection between the City of Charlottetown and the Town of Stratford.

The new pathway was designed for human-powered transportation, such as cycling, walking, skateboarding, rollerblading, power assist e-bikes and wheelchairs.  It is part of the Province’s vision for a network of green commuting options, emphasizing active transportation as an alternative to motorized vehicles.

This $4 million project was split between the provincial and federal governments with funding support from the New Building Canada Fund.

Quotes

“As we look towards the future, it’s vitally important that we keep making investments in our public infrastructure here on PEI. Making it easier for folks to keep active will make our communities better places to live, and the Active Transportation Pathway will help make sure everyone can continue to access our great network of green commuting options. This is just one of the more than 159 projects we’ve invested in here on the Island, and I know they’ll continue to make our Province an even better place to live and work.”
- Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, Lawrence MacAulay

“The Government of Canada knows that having accessible active transportation options is key to developing healthy, green, and inclusive communities, and we are proud to have helped make this new pathway possible. The opening of the Active Transportation Pathway will now provide a safe route for residents of Charlottetown and Stratford, and encourage people to stay active."
- Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, Sean Casey

“The active transportation pathway across the Hillsborough Bridge is an incredibly important piece of infrastructure, linking the two communities and enhancing the overall network of active transportation corridors across the province. This new path will enable people to actively travel all the way from Stratford to Cornwall on a safe and accessible trail. As a province we will continue to expand active transportation options and paths throughout the province, providing more environmentally friendly and healthy options.”
- Premier Dennis King

“We know that traffic is a major issue and our department is dedicated to supporting infrastructure that diversifies travel options for Islanders. Making it easier for residents to walk or bike between Stratford and Charlottetown will help us close the transportation gap and improve access for Islander who want to be more active. These investments will help reduce traffic, lead us to a cleaner environment and provide affordable travel choices for people commuting to the places they work, learn, play and socialize.”
- Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, James Aylward

“This active transportation pathway is an excellent example of multiple levels of government coming together in collaboration for the betterment of our growing communities. As a passionate advocate for active transportation in Charlottetown, I am excited to see this pathway come into operation. Increasing the ability of our residents to commute by bike or by foot in a safe manner allows us to continue to reduce our carbon footprint while also working to ensure our city is as accessible as possible, no matter how residents and workers choose to travel.”
- Mayor of Charlottetown, Philip Brown

The Hillsborough Bridge Active Transportation Pathway will greatly increase the ability of our residents to travel between Stratford and Charlottetown for work or leisure, while also providing a connection for Charlottetown residents to easily visit Stratford. This project has been a top priority of our staff and Council for many years, as well as by residents who identified it year after year in our Annual Resident Survey. We would like thank the provincial and federal governments for their funding towards this project, and to acknowledge the leadership of organizations such as Recreation PEI, Cycling PEI and Bike Friendly Communities who have also supported this project.
- Mayor of Stratford, Steve Ogden
