Another seniors housing complex will open in Charlottetown

Island seniors will benefit from an additional 16 social housing units that will be built on Lions Crescent in Charlottetown. 

Construction for a new 32-unit senior’s complex will begin this spring thanks to a partnership with the Parkdale Sherwood Lions Club. With funding from the Affordable Housing Development Program 16 of those units will be for seniors on the social housing registry. The other 16 will also be affordable units with support through the Community Housing Fund.

The new development is in the final stages of design and will have mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, including barrier free apartments for seniors with mobility challenges. The project will be a net-zero building and will include geothermal heating (heat within the earth) and solar panels to help reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. 

The Parkdale Sherwood Lions Club currently owns a 30-unit building, Lions Place, also located on Lions Crescent in Charlottetown that has provided affordable housing to Island seniors for the last 37 years. The new development will be built next door.  

“There is such a community feel here, I love it,” says Anne Doucette, a current resident of Lions Place. “I really appreciate what we have here and I am looking forward to sharing the location with other Island seniors.”

“With the addition of the new building, we will be able to offer a total 62 apartments to seniors at affordable rates,” says King Lion Gordon MacDougall. “This project wouldn’t be possible without the assistance of the Province.”

The government of PEI continues its commitment to provide affordable housing for seniors and is in the process of opening 168 units across the Island, in addition to the Parkdale Sherwood Lions Club complex. Government is also in the process of implementing 400 new mobile rental vouchers that help to offset renting costs for low-income Islanders.

There are currently 103 seniors on the social housing registry in the greater Charlottetown area. 

Island seniors eligible for housing supports will pay 25 per cent of their gross annual income for a unit.
