Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC)

The General Education Development (GED) program is no longer available in Canada and is being replaced with a new Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC). CAEC testing will be available in PEI later this year.

The CAEC is a new high school equivalency program developed in collaboration with provinces and territories across Canada. The CAEC provides a Canadian-made education credential that meets industry standards as a replacement for GED. The CAEC will provide a reliable indicator of Canadian adults' level of educational achievement for employers, post-secondary institutions,  and others.
 

Is My GED Still Valid?

The GED will continue to be a recognized credential. If you have a GED, the credential remains valid and does not expire. If you have a GED, there is no need to complete the CAEC.

Passing GED test scores from the 2002 Canadian GED Test Series will be recognized for test exemption and count towards the associated CAEC test subjects, until May 2027.

Eligibility:

You can take the CAEC Tests if you:

• live on PEI;    
• are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
• are at least 18 years of age;
• have been out of school for at least one year (12 months);
• do not already have a GED; and 
• do not have a high school certificate. 
   

CAEC Tests

There are 5 CAEC tests. The subjects are:

• reading
• writing
• math
• social studies
• science

CAEC test outcomes and sample tests are available to review.

How can I apply to write the CAEC test?
