Pregnancy Counselling and Support

Pregnancy counselling, information, and mental health support are offered through the Sexual Health, Options & Reproductive Services (SHORS).

Will I need a referral?

What services are offered?

Before a pregnancy

Whether you want to avoid a pregnancy or become pregnant, staff can assist you with choosing a contraceptive method or help facilitate fertility services, provide important nutritional and lifestyle information to help you prepare yourself for a healthy pregnancy.

Pregnancy

If you know or suspect you are pregnant and are unsure about what to do, staff will help you consider your options and direct you to the support you need.

Some options and considerations may include:

Continuing a pregnancy:  If you choose to continue your pregnancy, staff can help you with accessing a health care provider and other support to ensure you have a healthy pregnancy.

Adoption:  Staff can connect you with the appropriate services to discuss the adoption process and how it works. You may also want a doctor or health care provider who is knowledgeable about your needs to support you through your pregnancy.

Abortion:  Your options for an abortion will depend on your unique situation. Staff will help guide you through the abortion process and ensure you have the information and support you need. For more information, visit Abortion Services.

Pregnancy Loss

If you experience the loss of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth or another complication, support is available to you through Sexual Health, Options & Reproductive Services. For more information, visit Pregnancy Loss.

Maternal (Perinatal and Postpartum) Mental Health Services

Pregnancy and having a new baby can bring a wide range of emotions and affect individuals in many different ways. If you experience depression and/or anxiety during your pregnancy, after giving birth or within the first year after your baby is born, staff can provide you with an assessment, counselling, and support. Abuse During Pregnancy

Support is available if you do not feel safe and supported during your pregnancy. To understand signs of danger and to find how you can get help, review the information offered in the information sheet called Are you and your Baby Safe? [PDF | 229 KB].

What do I need to bring with me to my appointment?

Identification: All patients and support persons need to provide a photo ID. Patients will also be required to have a valid PEI Health Card

Information: You may also be asked about your personal health history and the medications you are currently taking. If you are taking medications, bring them with you or bring an up-to-date list of your medications [PDF | 609 KB], including over-the-counter vitamins or supplements.

Support Person: You can bring a support person who may accompany you to your appointment, but they may be asked to sit in the waiting area in certain circumstances. Please talk to a staff member to learn about your options.
