School Board Elections
How many trustees are on each school board?
Public Schools Branch (PSB):
- Eight trustees will be elected from seven electoral zones.
- The electoral zones are based on the ‘family of schools’ across the province.
- There will be one trustee elected per zone, except in the Charlottetown electoral zone due to the large student population in the area.
- Three additional members will be added to the board. There will be a position for one Mi’kmaq representative and two will be appointed through an Engage PEI process.
La Commission Scolaire de Langue Française (CSLF):
- Nine trustees will be elected from six electoral zones.
- One trustee is elected from Zones 2, 4 and 6.
- Two trustees are elected from Zones 1, 3 and 5.

When will the Election for Trustees be Held?
Both school board elections will be conducted by Elections PEI in September – October of 2022 and then every three years after that.

What do the PSB and CSLF do?
The PSB/ CSLF, through branch-based and school-based employees, are responsible for:
- Strategic planning and setting policy for public schools;
- approving budgets and operational plans;
- recruitment, employment, management and evaluation of education authority staff;
- the transportation of students to and from school;
- ensuring facilities are maintained in a proper manner and to provide a safe learning environment for students;
- the provision of English/ French as an Additional Language services (PSB Only);
- being accountable to students, parents, community members, and Minister for the performance and operations of the Education Authority;
- following the direction of the Minister respecting the delivery of professional development to address instructional personnel development needs; and
- following the direction of the Minister respecting the implementation of the Provincial Programs of Study and education programs prescribed, approved or authorized pursuant to the Education Act.
The Education Authorities are not responsible for things like curriculum development/implementation or the professional development of teachers.
Who Oversees the Day-to-Day Operations of the Educational Authorities?
The PSB and the CSLF Directors, serve as the CEO of each organization, oversee PSB/CSLF management and staff, and report directly to their Board of Trustees.
